It's a film I was initially quite proud of insofar as it came out exactly as I pictured it in my head, which is a rare thing indeed, but I grew a little conflicted about it for a few reasons I won't bore you with here. It had a nice chunky festival run either way, with stops including the <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/BFI%20London%20Film%20Festival" target="_blank">BFI London Film Festival</a>, <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2018/10/spreading-some-sunshine.html" target="_blank">LIAF</a>, <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2018/08/sunny-times-ahead.html" target="_blank">Encounters</a>, <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2018/12/onward.html" target="_blank">LSFF</a>, <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2019/02/northwestern-exposure.html" target="_blank">Just For Laughs</a>, <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2019/05/trifecta.html" target="_blank">Sydney Film Festival</a>, <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2019/05/trifecta.html" target="_blank">MIAF</a>, <a href="http://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2018/10/this-fine-social-scene.html" target="_blank">Cardiff Animation Nights</a> (<a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2018/10/sunny-disposition.html" target="_blank">twice!</a> What a lovely bunch), <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2019/12/montage.html" target="_blank">Anima Brussels</a> and a whole lot more. Ah well, we had a good run and it was nice to be a *sniff* sort of real author for a while.</p><p>APRIL FOOL'S. Ah, we have fun. I'm delightful.<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.routledge.com/Independent-Animation-Developing-Producing-and-Distributing-Your-Animated/Mitchell/p/book/9781032103105" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="410" data-original-width="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIQTi5VkiXkSuc21O2NDZhz3D0-kGBLtXP6WqbJuSWVvubz-QKx5vZJa4ZdNH8ihSCZ-3c0pWf6yGZsfQRah9xw2VUlAfpBDbLT8ZtRSWKyin8REz9IZ4XGFRZwvGMLL1_9MgKZ_o5_KNIM0asF0y77tKYxQWoD7si587vo3-co8ZdCVqlzP-x5Tmb3A/s16000/IndAnim2cover.jpg" /></a></div><br />It won't be in print because a brand-new, updated <a href="https://www.routledge.com/Independent-Animation-Developing-Producing-and-Distributing-Your-Animated/Mitchell/p/book/9781032103105" target="_blank">second edition</a> will be coming out on April 11th. <p></p><p>In essence this is the same book at its heart but it was a welcome opportunity to condense elements of it and keep it more up-to-date, as well as adding in a bunch of brand-new case studies and expanding on certain areas that have become more invaluable to indie artists in recent years, such as navigating the festival landscape and getting films out in the world and seen by the right people. As with the first edition, it is loaded with exclusive insight into the working processes of some of the industry’s most noteworthy indie animation talents, including Signe Baumane, Adam Elliot, Don Hertzfeldt, Kirsten Lepore, Robert Morgan, David OReilly, PES, Bill Plympton, Rosto, Chris Shepherd and dozens more; not to mention curational perspectives from the folks behind Ottawa International Animation Festival, Animafest Zagreb, Manchester Animation Festival, Cardiff Animation Festival, London International Animation Festival, . It also boasts a new cover model courtesy of the incredible stop-motion talent Joseph Wallace, whose pictured film <i>Salvation Has No Name</i> is smashing it at the moment (be sure to catch it at Annecy if you've not seen it yet). It's a little sad to bid farewell to the original <i>Ernie Biscuit</i> cover, but rest assured the areas of the book that cover Adam Elliot's work have remained untouched.</p><p>You can preorder now - and if you <a href="https://www.routledge.com/Independent-Animation-Developing-Producing-and-Distributing-Your-Animated/Mitchell/p/book/9781032103105" target="_blank">buy it directly from the publisher</a> you get free shipping to boot. First off a late (last?) hurrah for my short film <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Speed" target="_blank"><i>Speed</i></a> as it joins the wonderful German touring programme <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2020/11/old-friends.html" target="_blank">Shorts Attack</a> following its inclusion in the <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Interfilm%20Berlin" target="_blank">Interfilm Berlin</a> festival <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2020/11/old-friends.html" target="_blank">back in 2020</a>. I'll be there for a nice chunk of it to muck in with several of the events - the <a href="https://www.manchesteranimationfestival.co.uk/events/skwigly-screening/" target="_blank">Skwigly Screening</a> will return for the first time since COVID on November 14th at 2pm and there'll be a <a href="https://www.manchesteranimationfestival.co.uk/events/the-skwigly-podcast-presents-intimate-animation-live/" target="_blank">special live edition</a> of mine and <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Laura-Beth%20Cowley" target="_blank">Laura-Beth</a>'s podcast <a href="https://www.skwigly.co.uk/podcast_type/intimate-animation/" target="_blank">Intimate Animation</a> on the 16th at 3:45pm. Later that day at 8pm our traditionally infuriating <a href="https://www.manchesteranimationfestival.co.uk/events/skwigly-quiz/" target="_blank">Skwigly Quiz</a> will give festivalgoers a chance to viciously compete with one another before scratching and clawing their way to the prize table. There'll also be a screening of the <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Linoleum" target="_blank">Linoleum</a> programme <a href="https://www.manchesteranimationfestival.co.uk/events/sensitive-content-pre-recorded-qa/" target="_blank">Sensitive Content</a> followed by my recorded Q&A with the participants at 6pm on the 14th and Laura-Beth will be part of the panel <a href="https://www.manchesteranimationfestival.co.uk/events/animated-answers-3d-printing/" target="_blank">Animated Answers: 3D Printing</a> at 4pm on the 15th. As always there's a ton of other great stuff that'd be too long to list here so go ahead and check out the <a href="https://www.manchesteranimationfestival.co.uk/events/" target="_blank">programme</a> and grab yourself a <a href="https://www.manchesteranimationfestival.co.uk/tickets/" target="_blank">pass</a>.<br /><p></p><p></p>Struwwelpeterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01672406391547022941noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5685731208188789123.post-66855274437764894062022-09-20T12:52:00.101-07:002022-10-15T11:33:30.290-07:00Pod Pals<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://feeds.soundcloud.com/stream/1344623017-skwigly-skwigly-podcast-106.mp3" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho4y812aXARF_aLwKjZ8Q_jDMSpFfdlejTiO-100UH0a1eM2JVxqjZbKJfG5mYKhQPbcNqAbHzAYfVo-Dv1TIymaJrsSwiezOSYKiyhDk_PK9AQ6mlSE8kYulKl2_MAfDQovmk9RhTcMBtKPlzU8WubwUfnf_b5ypk7aHv82zoMviGWY7uLmDVLXMVUw/s320/SAP106_cover.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Some new podcasts for your waitin' ears. The first of which is actually released today - a special tenth anniversary edition of my 2012 graphic novel <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Throat" target="_blank"><i>Throat</i></a>.<p></p><p>This is the first time the entire, non-serialised version of the story has been in print for a fair few years, and it includes all the bonus content from the three-part editions as well as a brand new afterword that was a fun excuse to revisit and reflect on the project. As with pretty much every version of <i>Throat</i> that's come out, there's a <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/Throat-Tenth-Anniversary-Ben-Mitchell/dp/B0B6XKV92B" target="_blank">standard black and white edition</a> (dark cover) and a <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B6XPPPL3/" target="_blank">full-colour 'deluxe' edition</a> (light cover), depending on how many shekels you're willing to part with in these tough times. If you're not struggling with the ol' finances and are after something a bit more fancy then you might want to hold tight for a <a href="https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B6XPXM2P" target="_blank">limited edition hardcover</a> that will be coming soon. Not 100% clear on the release date of that one just yet but will pop it up when I know.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj98FxoEhr1XALS1wLu7soLC15MTDNXSNujNjG929p-Dmw2HcEdvwdBa2aYH09Wf6T3qmN1Fu85CSSD9v2I7WfU2PTVSy92cWvl60QOt4GlZDswWLVm6KvZBICarZGIPY3SVmZo26cvQUIINESwSAnz8Wz92hKDFP7Q98XZguSnI0-1BNyMCM7WKCeLIw/s508/throats.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="508" data-original-width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj98FxoEhr1XALS1wLu7soLC15MTDNXSNujNjG929p-Dmw2HcEdvwdBa2aYH09Wf6T3qmN1Fu85CSSD9v2I7WfU2PTVSy92cWvl60QOt4GlZDswWLVm6KvZBICarZGIPY3SVmZo26cvQUIINESwSAnz8Wz92hKDFP7Q98XZguSnI0-1BNyMCM7WKCeLIw/s16000/throats.jpg" /></a></div>In the meantime if your interest is piqued and you want a budget option, you can buy the older three-part set from me directly and cheaper than what they go for at most other outlets. I'll be selling the standard B/W set for £5 and the full-colour for £10 (plus shipping), heck if you want 'em signed I can do that although that'll probably just lower their resale value. Earlier in the month I was honoured to be part of <a href="https://animationfestival.no/preselection-in-fredrikstad/" target="_blank">this year's preselection team</a> for the <a href="https://animationfestival.no/" target="_blank">Fredrikstad Animation Festival</a> that focuses on new work from the Nordic region, alongside festival director Anders Narverud Moen and Merete Korsberg of Krystallplaneten. Given the curational remit of the festival it proved a uniquely interesting look at the current animation scene from that particular corner of the globe and I'm really excited to share the programme we've been able to put together later on in the summer. All being well I'll be over there again for the event itself, which runs from October 20th-23rd, so give us a shout if you happen to be around.<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://linoleumfest.com/en/news/text/96-oblish-mene-vse-garazd-ukrayinczi-ta-britanczi-inicziyuvali-spilnij-kulturnij-proyekt-pro-emoczijne-vigorannya" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" data-original-height="286" data-original-width="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRXP6gZ4v4hinptMc71lUZe2jfkl5DJjToIW0JOfY7nAXQWEZf7c7DrXuBsIBaszzukvfFbGH6w5IkfnqoDhwBnKzHoMawznugEtTr7HLyL-CKNTxZ_K17-JxU9oHYxEz2B2bzwVInEcpKIjSCKAqH5ar_P656tJnIdbv_qNZiaJKZN0b3V7_vk0XfKw/s16000/linoleum_imfine.jpg" /></a></div><br />In the meantime, <a href="http://www.skwigly.co.uk/" target="_blank">Skwigly</a> have paired up with <span style="font-weight: 400;">the <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Linoleum" target="_blank">Linoleum Contemporary Animation and Media Art Festival</a> for <a href="https://linoleumfest.com/en/news/text/96-oblish-mene-vse-garazd-ukrayinczi-ta-britanczi-inicziyuvali-spilnij-kulturnij-proyekt-pro-emoczijne-vigorannya" target="_blank">I'M FINE!</a>, a joint cultural project supported by the British Council within the framework of the UK/Ukraine Season of Culture. With a focus on mental health, specifically the pernicious issue of burnout, the event will take the form of film screenings curated by Linoleum director Anastasiia Verlinska and Skwigly's Aaron Wood who drafted me in to create some exclusive content with the participating filmmakers that will accompany the programme. We'll also be putting out interview panels as podcasts in the near future, so keep your eyes and ears on the ol' Skwigly podcast feed. As well as <a href="https://linoleumfest.com/en/program/special-screenings/blocks/FINE" target="_blank">I'M FINE!</a> and the accompanying programme <a href="https://linoleumfest.com/en/program/special-screenings/blocks/sensitive-content" target="_blank">Sensitive Content</a> being included as part of Linoleum's online edition via the platform MEGOGO from September 7th-11th, there'll also be some physical screenings starting August 27th at the <a href="https://chichestercinema.org/film/im-fine/" target="_blank">Chichester International Film Festival</a>.</span><p></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Obviously with Linoleum being a Ukrainian event the issues presented are especially timely, and while the festival as a whole has been able to continue in spite of unfathomably challenging circumstances they still could do with some help, so if you have any funds to spare you can learn how you can <a href="https://linoleumfest.com/en/news/text/91-support-linoleum-2022" target="_blank">give them a hand here</a>.<br /></span></p>Struwwelpeterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01672406391547022941noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5685731208188789123.post-38464480227882386012022-06-13T06:03:00.000-07:002022-07-15T10:25:41.958-07:00That 'monthly roundup' idea didn't pan out, did it?<p>I've been kinda quiet 'cause, well, shucks, I don't have a whole lot to say these days. I don't really buy blurays, except for the <a href="https://www.skwigly.co.uk/don-hertzfeldt-blu-ray-review/" target="_blank">occasional animation one</a>, but the sheer strength of craft that went into this is a pretty good justification to pick it up and by some accounts I've read this version looks a little nicer than its <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2022/01/roundup-january-2022.html" target="_blank">streaming alternatives</a>.<p></p><p style="text-align: center;"><iframe allow="autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" src="https://player.vimeo.com/video/547863792?h=1ee7167d8f&dnt=1&app_id=122963" title="Unity Sexual Health | Vaginal Discharge" width="500"></iframe></p>
<p>Another journey's end worth mentioning is my stint with the fine folks at <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Shy%20Guys%20Studios" target="_blank">Shy Guys Studios</a> wrapping up after four-and-a-bit years. It's probably the longest I've been at one place (albeit while juggling a ton of other gigs on the side, as my gluttony for punishment dictates) and it led to some really fun projects including graphics and titles for a bunch of TV shows, animation for educational/health films (the one above was a lot of fun) and my most recent film <a href="https://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Speed" target="_blank"><i>Speed</i></a> which managed to tick a few more festival selections off my personal wishlist. I'm properly gutted that I won't be able to make it in person as seeing <a href="http://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Sunscapades" target="_blank"><i>Sunscapades</i></a> as part of the same programme a <a href="http://benmitchellblog.blogspot.com/2020/02/east-and-west.html" target="_blank">couple years ago</a> was an absolute blast, but right now the faff of getting in and out of Belgium would just be too disruptive to make it feasible. Fingers crossed I'll make it back over there before too long.<br /><p></p>
