Grill Stock

With the release date of Independent Animation looming and the onus of marketing being on the author's shoulders in a large way these days, I'm planning on doing some presentations over the coming months to spread the word in lieu of a traditional book tour. The first stop will be at Animation Grill, a regular Cardiff-based meetup organised by Gareth Cavanagh, this coming September. These are a great opportunity for people to gather together and show works-in-progress to industry professionals for honest feedback, something I feel is absolutely key to making a standout short film and as such is a great fit for the overall spirit of the book. This edition will be a little different as it will be an all-day event include presentations, a panel discussion chaired by Dani Abram and other good stuff. As well as my talk you'll be able to hear from the ever-brilliant Jane Davies (AKA Upstart Thunder), stop-mo maestro Ben Halliwell and Double Negative's Stephen Enticott. Early-bird tickets will be available from tomorrow onward for the first week, after which the price will go up a bit so get yours booked early!

Following the success of our first showcase evening, in two weeks we have a new Skwigly screening event here in Bristol. This time around we're teaming up with James Ewen of CineMe and Tobacco Factory Theatres to present Love, Lust and Libido. As the title indicates, the focus of the screening is themes of relationships and sexuality, so things are bound to get a little risqué.

Spanning all forms of animation and storytelling styles, the event is the brainchild of Laura-Beth Cowley and it's been a joy to curate it with her the past few weeks. Some of the international filmmakers involved include Skwigly favourites Ruth Lingford, Signe Baumane and Grant Orchard as well as a bumper crop of both established and up-and-coming talent. For a mere £5 (£3 with concessions) it's sure to be a fun evening out, so swing by and enjoy the ribaldry!

Fringe Inducing

This year Skwigly's media partnership with the Bristol Encounters Short Film & Animation Festival is a little more involved and has extended to its Fringe Events programme. To that end I was approached a little while back to put together a screening of short films on behalf of the magazine, which was a lot of fun and made fine use of our recently-launched Skwigly Showcase.
If you're not aware of it, the showcase on the website is basically a means to get any animation work someone has already posted online to the Skwigly audience. It's gotten a lot of great feedback so far and been a wonderful insight into how talented our readership is. For the showcase evening we've picked some of our personal favourites and I've also reached out to a few filmmakers whose work, while not available to the general public as of yet, has really bowled me over.
I think it'll be a fun night, so if anyone's around Bristol this Wednesday (28th), swing by the Looking Glass just next to St. Nick's Market, around 7:30-8ish. You can find out more info on the event at Skwigly or on Facebook. It's also totally free, so don't say I never treat ya right!
